As all we know, the iPod touch is a beautiful device, but unfortunately Apple restricted a lot of its potential by locking the firmware. The only way to unlock the full potential of your iPod is to "jailbreak" the iPod, whereby you can remove Apple's firmware restrictions. Previously this required opening up the actual iPod and voiding the warranty, but luckily with recent advances you can safely jailbreak your iPod with little or no of computer experience, and your warranty will stay completely in tact! This is 100% safe, and there is no risk of damaging your iPod if you do it properly.

Jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad allows developers to access API’s that Apple traditionally does not allow them to access (Apple has strict rules/policies). Due to Apple’s select policies, developers went underground with the launch of the Cydia Store. Apple launched iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad today. It’s available for downloading today — just connect your mobile device to your computer such as ipod to computer. If you don’t get an update notice, select your mobile device from iTunes and click the Update button to check for the latest software update.

If you own an iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 or iPod Touch (1Gen, 2Gen, 3Gen or 4Gen) with iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1 installed or an iPad (WiFi and WiFi+3G owners) with iOS 3.2 or 3.2.1 installed: Download the latest jailbreak file from www.Jailbreakme.com.. Once you’ve downloaded your jailbreak file, the iDevice will restart. You can then launch the Cydia app (which will restart again), and install your desired applications through Cydia*. The following guide will show you how to jailbreak your iDevice.

Step 1. Make sure your iPod is running .3 or .4 firmware, which is the two latest versions. You can see this when you connect your iPod in iTunes. If it is not the newest firmware, upgrade!

Step 2. First, go to website and download either the Windows or Mac version of the jailbreaking software, depending on your system. When downloading finished, install the software somewhere on your computer. Then go to the folder you unzipped ZiPhone to, and open the bottom file, "ZiPhoneGUI.exe".

Step 3. Make sure your iPod is connected via USB cord, and then hit the "Jailbreak" button on the left side of the interface. Leave your iPod connected and let ZiPhone work it's magic for a couple minutes until it is done.

That's it, your done! Unplug your iPod touch and enjoy your new freedom!

Tip: If this worked, you should consider donating a small sum of money to the maker of ZiPhone to support future releases. If anything goes wrong, or you want to un-jailbreak your iPod, follow steps 1-2 and then click the "Prepare for Upgrade" button, and then use iTunes to restore your iPod's firmware.
